Cesenatico The Project - According to an agreement between Cesenatico Turismo and Legambiente, the experience of "Hotels recommended on account of their commitment to environmental protection" has been introduced into a central area of Riviera Romagnola where mass tourism apparently poses no serious problem. The Place - Cesenatico's tradition as a seaside resort dates back to the beginning of the XXth century with the idea of creating a garden-town to attract more tourists and of developing bathing establishments for beneficial purposes .Along with the markings of intensive real-estate development, there are still valuable architectonic buildings, such as Leonardo's Harbour, Piazzetta delle Conserve, Colonia AGIP (a former company seaside holiday home which was planned by architect Vaccaro and to which Legambiente devoted one of its Save-the-Art Campaigns some years ago). The town is also home to important research activities on sea waters in the Marine Biology Centre and harbours the Daphne motor ship monitoring Adriatic Sea waters. During its watching tours, even Goletta Verde often stops here. Among the sprawl of buildings there is a 1 km-long stretch of "untouched" beach - also quoted in the Touring's Club Blue Guide edited in cooperation with Legambiente - where one may possibly spend some leisure time. Tourists are of course invited to do so in low season: at the end of May or at the beginning of June and September, the area is quiet and pleasurable with its wide sandy shore and shallow waters. The Commitments - Hotels joining the project face the challenges by sustainability and Agenda 21 in a major business activity. As agreed in the protocol, compliance with the obligations undertaken by hotel managers during the bathing season shall be regularly verified: they concern waste reduction; the recycling of materials through garbage sorting; water saving; installation of energy saving lamps; the serving of meals prepared with foodstuffs containing neither chemicals nor genetically modified organisms (as far as it is known).
