Martinsicuro The Place: this quiet town along the medium-Adriatic coast is the first to welcome travellers coming from the North to visit Abruzzo. The centre of Martinsicuro is situated at the mouth of the Tronto river and has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age. It is quoted by Plinius as Castrum Trunctum and was abandoned after being repeatedly devastated by wars and the Lombard rule. Some ancient sources say that the present town was named after Martin de Segura, the Spanish noble who superintended the building of the Torrione on behalf of Emperor Charles V in the XVI century. It was first used as a watchtower against Saracen attacks from the sea, as many other lookout buildings that still exist along the Italian coasts, and later as Custom post. The initiative of Legambiente Turismo: an independent municipality since 1963, Martinsicuro has been developing the tourist businesses by offering a beautiful shore in Villarosa and a wide accommodation choice ranging from hotels, campsites and holiday farms. A strong interest in improving the environmental quality of local accommodation businesses has recently arisen and Legambiente Turismo has been invited to introduce its scheme ho help single businesses reduce the environmental impacts of tourist activities and promote local heritage and products. Some businesses have already applied for the Ecolabel and have committed to comply with the decalogue and realise all required actions. References:
