San Benedetto del Tronto

The Project - A protocol of Legambiente with the Municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto and the Hotel Association Riviera delle Palme was signed in 2004 to start co-operation in improving the tourist offer quality in the destination. The dynamic community of San Benedetto del Tronto is not only endowed with valuable nature, culture and historic heritage, but also shows a constant wish to improve and innovate. Even the decision to join Legambiente Turismo ecolabel proves the clear intent to include environmental protection among the basic elements of its tourist offer.

The Place - This little town is located at the end of the Tronto river: the sea promenade is lined by a luxuriant Mediterranean flora that mixes palms with oleander. Bathing establishments are situated along the shore, while fishing related activities concentrate on the inland. Since the old pre-roman Truentum was founded by the ancient Liburnian population in IX century b.C. and before the recent tourist development, this town has always lived in fishing and seamanship. The local museum (Ittico and delle Anfore) and also the traditional Feast of the Madonna della Marina - which takes place every year in July with a long procession of boats - bear witness of a strong bond between this community and the sea. The old borough still shows significant built heritage, such as the Gualtieri Tower dating back to XIV century.

The Start-up - The co-operation of Legambiente Turismo and tourist businesses in San Benedetto del Tronto formally dates back to 2004, when a protocol agreement was signed on board the Goletta Verde at the harbour. However practical actions to implement this agreement were taken in 2005: the training course for businesses to explain the Guidelines and fill single check lists, a necessary step to set up local levels of required measure compliance for the tourist season.
