VISIT is a european network of ecolabels for the promotion of sustainable tourism. In Europe there are about 40 regional, national and international ecolabels for tourism. Such diversity and lack of common standards has led to limited effectiveness. However the development of Europe towards a single market is a factor encouraging common standards.

In 2001 the Visit leading group, Visit partners and a group of leading ecolabels in Europe started to co-operate and to develop Common Basic Standards for their criteria and verification procedures. These standards enable the identification of those ecolabels which guarantee a high environmental quality of their certified hotels, campsites, beaches or marinas.
